1930's: Paul Tutmarc invented the Audio-Vox Electric Bass, in Seattle. Tutmarc's bass featured 4 strings, and increased the portability of the Bass Guitar. In addition, frets allowed bass players to play with more accuracy. Finally, Tutmarc's bass could be amplified. Although, his Audio-Vox never achieved much success.

From this point in time, many variations of the bass guitar were created. Although many bass guitars have only 4 strings, bass guitars are also made with more. For example, my bass guitar is an Ibanez sr505, and it was made with an extra lower string, or a B flat string. The main reason for this variation is that the extra string allows the bass player to play more melody, because they have a greater range of notes.
1960: Gibson comes out with the EB-6, which features a six string bass with the tuning of 'E A D G B E'
